Hiring Church Musicians
I recently witnessed a church with 700+ members lose their choir director and pianist/organist.
The new choir director has zero directing experience, while the previous choir director was a violinist. The picture on the right represents a church choir without leadership.
I am astounded that the church board allows ministers to make these hiring decisions.
Education and skill sets should always be checked out.
Years ago, I was hired to be an accompanist with some fantastic singers in a choir in Long Beach, CA. Two months into the job, the board fired an inept tuba player pretending to be a choir director. The board asked me to assume both responsibilities, directing and accompanying.
I stayed for nine years. We made beautiful music all those years.
